The report summarises the Committee on Singapore's Competitiveness (CSC)'s assessment of Singapore's economic competitiveness in the short term and over the next decade. Although the CSC was formed in May 1997 with the aim of assessing Singapore's longer term competitiveness, the onset of the economic crisis in July 1997 necessitated a critical re-examination of Singapore's competitiveness in the light of major changes in the external environment. The CSC's recommendations are presented in three parts. Part One focuses on immediate actions to enable the Singapore economy to weather the crisis. Part Two looks beyond the crisis and proposes strategies to position Singapore for the eventual recovery. Part Three contains the detailed sectoral plans for manufacturing, finance and banking, hub services and domestic businesses.

Report of the Cost Review Committee 1996

The report summarises the key deliberations of the Cost Review Committee 1996. It examines the cost increases in the four areas of key concern identified by the committee, i.e. health care, housing, education and transport. It also examines other issues related to cost of living, namely the lower-income group, elderly and household debt. The report also reviews the impact of the Goods & Services Tax on inflation and business compliance costs, and the treatment of housing costs in the CPI. Lastly, it summarises the committee's conclusions and recommendations.

The report summarises the key deliberations and findings of the Cost Review Committee (CRC). Part I assesses the accuracy of the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Part II provides an overview of inflation in Singapore and analyses the impact of cost increases on different income groups and age groups. Part III examines cost increases in various areas, namely, health, public and private housing, education, public and private transport and the impact of Goods and Services Tax. Part IV analyses business costs and competitiveness. Part V summarises conclusions and recommendations of the CRC.

The Strategic Economic Plan: Towards a Developed Nation

The report sets out the strategies and programmes for Singapore to realise the vision of attaining the status and characteristics of a first league developed country within the next 30-40 years. The report is divided into two parts: Vision & Strategies and Implementation. There are six chapters in Part I, providing an overview of the economic landscape. It includes economic plans of Singapore, the vision, key macros strategies and two areas of specific interest namely, industrial strategy and economic resilience. Part II iterates the strategic thrusts mentioned in Part I, in conjunction with the respective programmes identified to support the objectives of the strategic thrusts. There is a total of 8 strategic thrusts and 17 programmes.

The Economic Committee was convened in April 1985 to review the progress of the Singapore economy and to identify new directions for its future growth. The work of the Committee is published in this comprehensive report. The Executive Summary outlines the causes of recession and policy changes recommended, future position and new directions, and highlights the fundamentals, strategies and key policies for Singapore. The first part of the report reviews Singapore's economic performances during 1980-1984. The other 4 parts cover policy changes, future strategies and prospects, policies for growth and the various sectors of the economy.
