Expanding Our Trade

WTO

Singapore places the highest priority in the multilateral trading system which is embodied in the World Trade Organization (WTO). The WTO is the primary forum driving global trade liberalisation, and engaging trading nations to work towards removing tariffs and non-tariff barriers. The multilateral framework of rules and avenue for recourse is a key reason why WTO membership is important to Singapore.

Since the first WTO Ministerial Conference in 1996, Singapore has concluded negotiations with 40 other WTO member countries to eliminate tariffs for information technology products under the Information Technology Agreement.

We were also among the WTO member countries that agreed to liberalise basic telecommunications services and financial services beyond the level achieved during the Uruguay Round. These agreements will provide improved market access for our information technology trade, financial and telecommunications services. Singapore's accession to the Government Procurement Agreement (GPA) will provide our companies with non-discriminatory access into the government procurement markets of GPA signatory countries.
