Life in MTI

Want to find out more about life in MTI?  Here's what some of our MTI officers have to say:

  • Alpana Roy, Senior Assistant Director (APEC and Americas), Trade Division

Coming Full Circle ... ...

Prior to her appointment with MTI, she had spent the

bulk of her career with the former Trade Development

Board (currently known as IE Singapore). In 2004,

she decided to switch careers and work in the

education sector. "I liked trade issues, but I was

also interested in the education line," she explains.

For the next 18 months, Alpana joined NUS as an

education planner. However, she soon realised that

her interest still remained in trade issues. Returning to

MTI proved to be a homecoming of sorts for Alpana -

coming back to something that was familiar and yet,

new at the same time.

Now in the APEC and Americas team, she explains that

she literally gets into the nuts and bolts of trade issues. It

is the job's ability to keep her on her toes that gets her

fired up. "Every day, new issues and developments crop

up, and you have to handle them. It is stimulating,"

she points out.

"The other plus side of this job is the sheer number of people I meet from the different agencies in Singapore and from overseas. You build up your confidence when you talk and interact with them. This job also gives me a breadth of experience and knowledge which benefits my personal development," she says.

The numerous courses at MTI, ranging from personal development to work-related ones on areas such as the WTO, also help boost her intellectual and personal growth. "The challenge lies in honing your skills to identify which event could have an impact, and then deciding what we are going to do to tackle this development," she says.

Often working closely with her team, she says it is easy to bond with her colleagues. "They have plenty of spirit and energy. Even though I have been here for only four months, we share a great camaraderie," she adds. The positive experience at MTI has cemented her future career plans. "The bulk of my career has been with trade. Trade issues are obviously close to my heart, so I will continue in this line of work."
